The FAQ's below are for general guidance only. For specific questions, please refer to the application guides and data sheets on our product pages or give us call and we will answer any questions that you have.
Q. What substrates can Jotun Hardtop AX be applied to?
A. Jotun Hardtop AX is suitable for properly prepared steel, aluminium, and concrete surfaces, as well as previously painted surfaces. It provides excellent adhesion when applied over a compatible primer, ensuring long-lasting protection and durability.
Q. Is a primer necessary before applying Jotun Hardtop AX?
A. Yes, applying a suitable primer is recommended to enhance adhesion and corrosion resistance. For steel, Jotamastic or Penguard primers are commonly used, while for aluminium and concrete, Penguard is the preferred choice.
Q. How long does Jotun Hardtop AX take to dry?
A. At 23°C, Hardtop AX is touch dry in approximately 1 hour. It can be overcoated after a minimum of 5 hours and reaches full cure in about 5 days. Drying times may vary depending on temperature and humidity levels.
Q. Can Jotun Hardtop AX be applied over existing paint?
A. Yes, it can be applied over existing, well-adhered 2-pack coatings after proper surface preparation. The surface should be clean, dry, and lightly abraded to ensure good intercoat adhesion before applying Hardtop AX.
Q. What application methods are suitable for Jotun Hardtop AX?
A. Hardtop AX can be applied using airless spray, conventional spray, brush, or roller. Conventional airsprayspray is the best method for achieving the smoothest finish. Application by airless spray gives optimal dry film thickness in a single coat.
Q. How should the surface be prepared before application?
A. All surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, and contaminants.. All surfaces require suitable primers before applying Hardtop AX unless you’re applying over an existing compatible topcoat.
Q. Is thinning required for Jotun Hardtop AX?
A. For best results we recommend thinning. The percentage thinning is dependent on the application method and ambient conditions. We recommend starting at 10% and adjusting accordingly. Jotun Thinner No. 10 can be used.
Q. What is the coverage rate of Jotun Hardtop AX?
A. The typical spreading rate when using a brush or roller and 10% thinners is around 12 – 15m² per litre. Actual coverage will vary depending on surface roughness, porosity, and application method.
Q. Can Jotun Hardtop AX be used in marine environments?
A. Yes, it is widely used in marine applications, including ship exteriors, superstructures, and offshore platforms. It offers excellent UV and weather resistance, making it suitable for harsh marine conditions.
Q. How should tools and equipment be cleaned after use?
A. Tools and equipment should be cleaned immediately after application using Jotun Thinner No. 10.
Q. How durable is Jotun Hardtop AX in industrial environments?
A. Jotun Hardtop AX is highly durable and provides excellent resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and harsh atmospheric conditions, making it ideal for industrial sites, refineries, and offshore structures.
Q. Is Jotun Hardtop AX resistant to UV exposure?
A. Yes, Hardtop AX provides superior UV resistance, ensuring long-term gloss and colour retention, which makes it ideal for exterior applications in harsh environments.
Q. Can Jotun Hardtop AX be used in high-temperature environments?
A. While Hardtop AX is suitable for atmospheric exposure, it is not recommended for surfaces exposed to continuous high temperatures above 120°C. For high-heat applications, a heat-resistant coating is recommended.
Q. Is Jotun Hardtop AX compliant with environmental regulations?
A. Yes, Hardtop AX has a low VOC formulation compared to traditional polyurethane coatings, making it more environmentally friendly while still offering exceptional durability and performance.
